Instead I examined what was happening in the school.

The problem soon became clear. My son was being forced to take part in a basement waterproofing Toronto school play. He was supposed to perform in a Japanese fisherman’s dance, which made absolutely no sense to him, since he was convinced that Japanese fishermen did their jobs and lived their lives, but did not perform a ritual dance to celebrate a good catch. His teacher, however, insisted that her students had to do it. My son’s response was not to protest or argue, but to bottle up his feelings until he became ill. Once the problem was uncovered, it took only a few minutes to work out with the school an alternative role for him, and life quickly returned to normal. If I had not worked in the school system and kept the psychologists and child-guidance experts at arm’s length, who knows what might have happened? Unfortunately such experiences are more frequent than they should be in schools, with the result that too many children are officially labelled as “learning disabled” or “emotionally disturbed” and therefore in need of special education.
